Palacio Estrugamou can be defined as a single residence of 1,300 m2 (14,000 sq feet), on two floors otherwise known in Buenos Aires as a “petit hotel”.
Built in 1905, for the Estrugamou family with exquisite materials (such as oak windows and doors, oak floors, hand crafted joinery, iron lacework, glass and crystal stained panels, elaborate fireplaces, marble, ceramics, etc) imported to Argentina exclusively from Italy and France, all of which still today can be found in an excellent state of preservation.
The building is a faithful exponent of the Eclectic style of this era with reminiscent Barroco features.

The Estrugamou family used the building until 1932, and amongst many of the curious anecdotes handed down over the years, it is said that Mr Estrugamou had a friendly relationship with famous Argentine tango singer and composer, Carlos Gardel, who was often invited to sing at this home, where he performed from the pinturesque balcony overlooking the patio, where friends and family gathered for parties and social events.


In 1983 the palacio was acquired by the present owners who created a well known studio of architecture led by the reknown Architect B. Dujovne, who is largely responsible for the preservation of the style of the building and its features.


Curiously, restauration works in 1983 were delayed due to the filming of “Asesinato en el Senado de la Nación” on site.

The building has often been used as the site for lectures, conferences and debates for important figures in Argentine economics and political circles, including ex-Ministers Juan Llach and Domingo Cavallo.



The Exterior and Building Frontage

This is one of the architectural works that best represents the Eclectic style of Argentina and its Barrocco influence. The building occupies an important and imposing corner location and has a dominant impact from many avenues all around.

The state of conservation of the building, which recently celebrated its 100 year anniversary, is excellent.

 

Access

The quality of the craftsmanship and design of the doors and windows clearly depicts the talent of artesans of the era. The entrance vestibule features large double Oak doors with inset crystal.




Great Hall

This large and main hall features an outstanding and dramatic staircase, superb Slavonian Oak floors, soaring galleried ceiling and incredible vitraux windows.
The fireplace, the enormous mirror, the chandeleirs, all emphasize the sumptuousness of the era.

In the Grand Salon, or Reading Room, a bow window overlooks the garden, and here the excellent handcrafted details such as the fireplace, floors and ceilings are showcased.


South Wing

A separate southern wing of the building currently provides office space which if integrated with the rest of the main entry level provides for an array of opportunities including space for an intimate supper club, private bar, dining room, meeting space and a reception area.
All the windows are elegant in style and design, most with stained or leadlight glass, classic arches, and inset bevelled cristal. For it's floor plan design and building location, all rooms face the exterior and provide an abundance of natural light.


All the window joinery is 1/2 point with “vitreaux” especially imported from Italy and in an excellent state of preservation.
Some of the glass needing restoration can be repaired by specialists in “vitreaux”, where, at least in Argentina, expert craftsmen still reside.

 



Upper Floor

From the principal oak staircase, one accesses the upper floor where there is a commanding view of the Great Hall below, where a balcony dominates the upper floor and provides the central point of communication between the two wings. Fireplaces are also found on the upper floor in the lavishly appointed rooms all of which face outside. Passageways lead to all private rooms and reception rooms.



Servants wing
This is reached by the garden and also the reading room, where there is a separate service stairwell.


Meeting and Conference Room

This large room is situated in the ground floor with view to the garden.




Magnificent courtyard garden
This large and harmonious sector of green courtyard space provides a calm and peaceful setting, and superb outlook from inside, as it sits bathed in afternoon sun.

Library

Located in the north wing, it features mahoganny panelled doors in a rich sumptuous galleried room.
